The Hidden Cost of 'Free' News: Who Funds the Stories You See

A PureScoop investigation into undisclosed funding relationships between digital news outlets and the corporate interests they cover.

When you read a breaking news story about a company, you probably assume the publication covering it has no financial stake in the outcome. Our six-month investigation into 34 prominent digital news outlets found that assumption is increasingly wrong.

Venture capital firms, private equity funds, and major corporations have quietly taken equity positions in newsrooms that simultaneously cover those same industries. In twelve of the outlets we examined, disclosures were either absent or buried in terms-of-service documents few users ever read.

The problem is structural, and it's getting worse as digital advertising revenue collapses and publishers scramble for alternative funding sources. PureScoop has no corporate investment. We are funded entirely by subscribers.
